The project
Produced as an order of 50 and delivered in batches, this award goes to companies awarded the D-mærket certification through PensionDanmark. Companies qualified at different times rather than in fixed rounds, so each award carries its own engraving.
The approach
The idea is that the D-mærket mark should look as though it is floating inside clear material with nothing holding it up. That rules out most of the obvious methods. Printing the mark onto the surface leaves it visibly on top, and sandwiching it between two sheets leaves a seam. It has to sit inside a cutout in a single sheet, which turns the whole design into a fit problem rather than a decoration problem.
How it was made
The base is solid oak with a CNC machined groove cut into it to take the acrylic plate. The plate is laser cut with the shape of the letter D removed from it, and the 3D printed logo is set into that cutout as an insert. The fit is snug enough that the insert sits flush with no gap and no adhesive line visible from the front, and the fully transparent acrylic around it does the rest of the work. Each base is engraved individually, and the finished award stands around 20 cm tall and 12 cm wide.
Where the same approach works
An effect that depends on a fit rather than on a material is only ever as good as the tolerance, and across 50 units it has to be identical every time. Getting a repeatable snug fit between a cut sheet and a printed insert is what makes the illusion hold across a whole run. The same approach suits certification and membership awards, recognition programmes with many recipients, and any series where every piece must look identical while carrying different text.
