The project
Kabeldyret is an ongoing product development project for Dan Safety, a Danish company. It is a line of holders that keep cables, hoses and pipes off the floor on construction sites, in warehouses, and anywhere temporary services are run through a working space. Loose cables lying across a floor have been treated as simply how things are for decades, and the product exists to question that.
The approach
The work is still moving. Dan Safety is continuously meeting potential customers, and what those conversations reveal about real site conditions feeds straight back into the design. That is also why the product is a line rather than a single object. No one holder suits a whole site, so the range spans many sizes and takes everything from thin cable through to hose and pipe, and the designs are still being detailed as those needs get clearer.
How it was made
Each holder is a profile with holes, grooves and gaps arranged to grip a particular range of diameters, so a cable or hose clips in and stays there. Mounting is the other half of the problem, because a fixing that works on a scaffold tube is no use on a wall. Different variants across the line mount by screw, by magnet, by clamping onto the standard profiles and rails already present on most sites, or by hooking over a tube. The intention across the whole range is that whatever you meet on site, something in the line will hold it.
Where the same approach works
Developing a line rather than a single product is a different exercise. Every decision has to hold across sizes and mounting types, so details get resolved once and then carried through the range instead of being solved again for each variant. The same approach suits families of parts, accessory ranges, and any product where one idea has to be re-sized many times over without being redesigned each time.
